Overcrowding in the emergency department has become a significant problem as it negatively impacts on the safety and quality of. In an overcrowded context it can happen that the pain is underestimated or overestimated and also that there is no time for a revaluation.
TARGETS
This study aims to explore the behavioral markers in relation to taking care of the patient with pain in an emergency-urgency context characterized by constant uncertainty in which overcrowding represents an additional risk.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
To have a full description of the phenomenon under study, we chose to use a qualitative approach using trace questions that investigated whether overcrowding in the emergency room allowed us to recognize emerging priorities and if it could affect the assessment of pain in any way. The interviews were conducted in June-July 2019 subject to the authorization of the informants and the Directorate of Health Professions.
RESULTS
The sample analyzed shows that they possess advanced skills in ensuring the recognition and treatment of emergencies in the event of overcrowding. The evaluation of pain, in the absence of time for revaluation, may be affected by the underestimation and overestimation defects The strategies that they put in place for the management of the waiting room are cause for dissatisfaction because they are employees / physicians and they further increase the waiting times for minor codes.
CONCLUSIONS
Overcrowding is one of the main causes of inadequate management of pain in triage. Furthermore, the workload to which triage nurses are subjected is important, both physically and mentally, causing dissatisfaction with the assistance provided. Finally, due to internal and external organizational obstacles, it emerged how nurses are unable to manage pain in its entirety.
