Abstract

Background: Acinetobacters are Gram-negative aerobic bacilli or cuddles that belong to the Moraxellaceae family. They are ubiquitous and can survive up to a month on dry surfaces and are commonly present on the skin as a natural microbiota. There are many species of Acinetobacter; all can cause human diseases, but A. baumannii is responsible for about 80% of infections. Recently, infection with drug-resistantacinetobacterbaumanniihasemerged, particularly in intensive care units in immunosuppressedpatients, in patients with severe underlying disorders, and in patients treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics after invasive intervention.
Purpose:The aim of this paper is to deepen knowledge about the prevention and transmission of Acinetobacter baumannii and its dangerousness.
Materials and methods: A literature review has been carried out on the basis of 55 articles of primary and secondary literature, published from 2008 to 2019. The research was carried out through Pubmed databases, Cochrane Library, Elsevier, CINAHL, guidelines and scientific journals.
Results: The research has revealed a series of actions that can be implemented to try to identify and contain the spread of this micro-organism. In addition, with regard to the role of nurses, the importance of their added value has emerged, ensuring an informed and responsible management of antibiotics, applying appropriate contact prevention measures, preventing infections and providing education to those involved.
Conclusions: It has been shown that the predominance of this micro-organism in hospital contexts is very marked and its danger is constantly increasing. The role of nurses is therefore essential to prevent the spread in hospital contexts, through the application of recommended and documented strategies and behaviour in the literature.
