Abstract
This paper deals with arteriopathy of the lower limbs and its related outcomes, such as critical ischemia and amputation of the limb.
We will focus on the psychological impact that affects the patient and his family and on how the nursing role,
together with a multidisciplinary team, is crucial. The aim of this work is to provide an up-to-date picture of the current state of knowledge related to post-amputation psychological adaptation, providing a critical analysis of methodological aspects and illustrating some tools (self-assessment scales) created to investigate psychosocial issues of amputees.
Given the complexity of the adaptation process, considering aspects of a psychosocial nature,
as well as a rehabilitation doctor, is of central importance for patient care and provides data for both research and clinical practice.
For this it is necessary to carry out other studies, in order to explore the evolution of psychological reactions in the different
phases of the journey.
