Abstract

Intrahospital Triage is an important activity carried out by specifically trained nursing staff, which has the purpose of assigning the correct priority to the patients that show up in the ER. Generally composed of four colored levels, Triage is nowadays a prioritization system that needs some improvements in order to face different problems, especially the overcrowding of ER services, the waiting times management and a proper decision on the path the patient should undertake according to the care’s intensity.
In August 2019, in Italy, the fifth priority level has been introduced together with its related guidelines. The purpose of this study is to examine how it has been introduced and how this could implement the efficiency and the efficacy of intrahospital Triage inside the different Italian Regions, paying specific attention to the development of the system in Emilia-Romagna.
To answer the above-mentioned questions, the evolution of intrahospital Triage has been explained, from its historical roots to those that have become reference models in the modern age. Its functioning has been shown by analyzing the path undertaken by the patient, from the admission process to the outcome, going through the priority level attribution.
The dissertation has been completed by presenting considerations on the usefulness of national regulations and guidelines against the strong decision-making power of the Regions. An overview of the main world’s Triage models, which have proved to be cutting edge and supported by many scientific evidences, has also been illustrated.
