Abstract
INTRODUCTION:
The therapeutic relationship, as a care factor in the assistance of oncology patients, guarantees a personalized nursing assistance.
The fundamental components of the helping alliance are empathy, compassion and interpersonal behavior.
The aim of this study is to measure these behaviors in a sample of nurses from Centro Oncologico Modenese and in a sample of students from the Nursing Degree Course in Modena, who attended a practical traineeship in the same ward.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
From July 2019 to September 2019, three validated questionnaires and an additional
socio-anagraphical questionnaire were administered to 21 nurses and 19 students.
RESULTS:
The study highlights a similar presence of anxiety and uncomfortableness in both nurses and students, while performing
assertive behaviors.
Five assertive profiles were found among the nurses, while different behavioral profiles were found among the students.
The students showed more empathy compared to the nurses.
The nurses showed a more developed self-compassion compared to the sample of students.
CONCLUSIONS:
The study identified the researched relational skills, highlighted how essential they are in the humanization of assistance,
and in the relationship as a therapeutic factor.
Further research on this subject is necessary, highlighting the importance of knowledge and awareness of oneself
in order to comprehend other peoples needs.
