Abstract

Creating an intestinal stoma can have a negative impact on people's sexuality and sexual health. Through a reading of the literature the study aims to investigate some aspects related to the ostomy person, including the early or late complications that may arise and, in particular, the factors that can affect the sexuality and intimacy of the assisted person. Sexuality is a central aspect of human being, since it is a general well-being of the person. Some factors that could affect the sexual health of the person with intestinal ostomy will be investigated, including altered body image, the presence of organic sexual dysfunctions, changes in interpersonal relationships, quality of information and relations with health professionals regarding possible changes in the sexual sphere. In this perspective, the role of the doctor in sexual therapies will be briefly analyzed, and in a more in-depth manner, the figure of the nurse in assisting the ostomate patient with problems in the sexual sphere. The nursing skills to be implemented during the care of the assisted will be analyzed and they can be placed side by side with those of the ostomy nurse, the medical staff and the psychologist, considering the aspects of collaboration and autonomy in respect of the specific roles’ competences.
Among the nursing competences, counseling skills are emphasized, considered as a process to help the client's dialogue on the sexual sphere. The sexuality of the person is not an easy subject, a strategy that can help the nurse in solving this problem, called PLISSIT Model, will be deepened.
