Abstract
The progressive increase of the lifes expectancy and the aging has led to an exponential growth of new patients with dementia. Moreover, because of the limited efficacy of the pharmacological treatment well witness more and more to the research of non-pharmacological interventions to improve the level of the assistance, in order to limit the cognitive and functional decline so that the subject and his caregivers can have a better quality of life.
In 2012 the WHO (World Health Organization) and the ADI (International Dementia Association) wrote a report called Dementia: a priority of Public Health which highlighted the social problem caused by dementia as well encouraged many Countries to consider dementia as a priority of global public health.
This composition has the purpose to explain the benefits of Doll therapy in the management of the dementia patients affected by BPSD (Behavioural and Psychological Signs and Symptoms in Dementia) presenting symptoms such as aggressivity, anxiety, apathy, depression and wandering. The therapy is centred on the individual, and valorises his cognitive, relational and empathic ability through the emotional commemoration and the feeling of maternity for the doll. Many trials has been done in various nursing homes, which have underlined how Doll therapy can promote the well-being of the patient by stimulating a reduction of the BPSD (Behavioural and Psychological Signs and Symptoms in Dementia), especially in the regards in the regards of symptoms like aggressivity and apathy.
