Abstract

Introduction: In the emergency department, nurses are in direct contact with people who find themselves in a situation of great hardship, which often leads to unacceptable acts of violence. In the Emergency Department at the Polyclinic of Modena there are various forms of violence including verbal, physical, gender and discriminatory, which recently have become increasingly important.
Aim: The purpose of this study is to investigate the issue of violence perpetrated by third parties in the Emergency Department at the Polyclinic of Modena. An accurate analysis of the violence in the emergency room, could be a fundamental basis from which to propose new projects that aim to prevent violence against health workers.
Method: For the preparation of this study, various bibliographic searches were performed on PubMed, PsycINFO, ScienceDirect and on the websites of the main national and international institutions involved in the issue of workplace violence. Subsequently, research was carried out by a 300 hours field observation and on a sample of 20 nurses who were interviewed.
Findings: The analysis of the data indicates that the main problems underlying the violence perpetrated by third parties in the Emergency Room at the Polyclinic of Modena are the long waiting times, communication skills of the health personnel, the evident lack of adequate security measures against violence and the phenomenon of under-reporting that goes to downplay the real entity of this issue. Another clear and disconcerting data is the acceptance of verbal aggression.
Conclusions: Most health professionals don't feel safe during professional practice, this study lays the foundations for the development of a project aimed at preventing violence in the Emergency Department at the Polyclinic of Modena.
