Abstract

Intra-hospital transport of the person assisted in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) consists in the mobilization of the person within the same hospital for the execution of diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures. It is a frequent event because it is fundamental to guarantee the continuity in healthcare.
This study has been realized through the consultation of the main databases such as Medline, CINAHL, ERIC and COCHRANE Library, using textbooks and through the consultation of experts such as Dr. Virna Degli Esposti, nursing coordinator at the Reanimation Operating Unit of Local Health Authority in Turin. The key words used to conduct the research were: "Critically ill patients", "intrahospital transport" and "intensive care unit", interposed by the word "AND".
The research pointed out that moving the person from the safe environment of the ICU to areas where the same intensity of care cannot be guaranteed, can lead to a series of complications and adverse events.
An evaluation of the risks / benefits related to the transport, the choice of the right transport team, the preparation and stabilization of the person, an adequate preparation of the necessary equipment and an effective communication with the destination site before proceeding with the transport, are essential for preventing complications. From this point of view, the figure of the nurse plays a fundamental role, because it must be able to plan and coordinate the intra-hospital transport in every phase, ensure the safety of the person and intervene to resolve any adverse events.
To perform an optimal intra-hospital transport, the assigned team should follow the existing guidelines. In absence of these, it is necessary to follow good clinical and assistance practices. A good strategy to perform intra-hospital transport in an optimal way is to use structured checklists.
