Abstract

This thesis deals with PAD, acronym that stands for a particular condition that includes pain, agitation and delirium, common symptoms in critical ill patients that, besides being unwanted, could lead to further problems such as increase of oxigen consumption and hypermetabolism, going to weigh on the prognosis. The idea of treating this topic stems from the direct experience of internship in the Polyvalent Intensive Care Unit of Modena University Hospital, during which it was possible to observe the progression of the three symptoms in patients and the treatments undertaken. From this, the choice to deepen the topic and, in particular, to search for protocols aimed at their treatment.
First of all, the definition, causes and consequences of pain, anxiety and delirium were analyzed; subsequently a review of the literature was carried out by consulting on-line catalogs and secondary and primary databases, such as the Cochrare Library, UptoDate, Pubmed and Cinhal, inserting the key terms "Intensive Care Unit", "ABCDE Bundle", "ICU PAD Guidelines", "Pain Assessment", "Epidemiology in ICU". The research continued with the consultation of protocols and procedures applied in the Polyvalent Intensive Care Unit of Modena, upon authorization by the staff who work there.
