Abstract

The continuous progress of society and the incessant evolution of times and populations has led man to relate to new cultures, trends and tendencies, especially the body art, it is very often object of prejudice. Tattoos and piercings are constantly increasing, spread day by day in adolescents and adults, belonging or not a specific classes, so as to be placed in very different social and work contexts. Among these, the health sector is also involved so much that, in hospitals and clinics, doctors, operators and nurses very often wear this type of forms of art.
The emergence of these practices has greatly influenced the patient’s conception of the medical-nursing staff influencing their relationship and the evaluation of professionalism. In addition to illustrating the true health risks and possible hygienic-sanitary interventions and precautions, in this paper we have analyzed the results of several studies carried out in many parts of the world trying to understand how much and how, tattoos and piercings, can influence the nurse-patient relationship. It emerges that, owning these forms of art represents a real parameter of evaluation, not only for the company policies adopted by clinics and hospitals as they are placed in the dress code, but above all because the patient can judge the nurse with body art as a fellow not to be trusted, inefficient and unsuitable for his work.
