Abstract
Today organs and tissues transplant represents a consolidated and life-saving therapy to some pathologies, as well as a procedure to improve the quality of life and, consequently, the survival of many people. The problem is that the demand for organs is far superior to their availability: for this reason its necessary to implement the information starting from the healthcare personnel, up to public opinion in general, in order to develop the culture of donation. The purpose of this work is to spread the culture of gift, and in particular the "non-heart-beating donation", based on the latest scientific evidence available. A literature systematic review was made, analyzing the donation of organs and tissues in a general framework, through current legislation, historical evolution of donation and its religious and ethical implications, emphasizing the concept of encephalic death and the various possibilities of donation, taking into consideration Italian reality and statistics. The central part of the script illustrates what are nurses skills in donations, fundamental for what concerns the whole process, from a relational point of view and support to families in the process of mourning, up to the most technical skills, regarding monitoring, maintaining and treating the potential donor in asystole. In the last part of the paper, a clinical case is presented, lived in first person, related to the operative reality of Sant'Agostino Estense Hospital in Baggiovara (MO), with relative development of NNNs healthcare plan.
