Abstract

Background: the first response to citizens with emergency health needs passes through the management of the telephone call that reaches the Operations Center 118 in case of illness or trauma on the territory. The nurse who in many Italian companies carries out this activity, represents the first activator of the process that responds to the need through the rapid activation of the health component (ambulance-medical car-helicopter) and the extra-health component (law enforcement, fire fighters, etc.) present on the territory.
Subject of the thesis: they are the activities of managing a distress call through the use of the telephone interview, guided by protocols, procedures, and communication devices in order to effectively bring the rescue to an end. Materials and methods: to elaborate this thesis we carried out a review of the literature through the consultation of major databases such as CINAHL and The Cochrane Library; we made protocols research, procedures, guidelines and law articles on the Google Scholar search engine; consulting textbooks and collaborate with experts such as Fabio Mora, Coordinator of the C.O. 118 Emilia Est.
Purposes: this thesis aims at showing the essential skills that regulate the activity of the 118 nurse. Moreover, we wanted to highlight the telephone interview in detail to show how difficult it is to carry out a correct telephone triage in the short pre-established times.
Critical issues: from the analysis of the realities taken into consideration we can deduce the lack of homogeneity in the organizational and training systems within the C.O. 118 and the absence of performance indicators that can measure the effectiveness of the activity that the nurse carried out. Conclusions: the research has showed the fundamental importance of post- basic training, the presence of procedures and protocols that guide the activities and the development of useful skills for health aid.
