Abstract

INTRODUCTION
Burnout is associated with the helping professions, such as nurses, doctors, teachers and psychologists, which combine stress and idealism. The stress, thus, can lead to burnout, the latter can also provoke depressive symptoms, and in the most severe cases, suicidal ideation also among students. The aim of this study is to measure burnout, the depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation among the students of the Nursing Course in Modena, and to pinpoint the predictive factors within the study together with the 5 personality factors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
319 students, in April 2018, were asked to fill out an anonymous questionnaire which investigated about socio-demographic, school and work data and included 5 scales.
RESULTS
The survey carried out highlights, among students, an intermediate emotional burnout and reduced personal self-fulfilment risk, against a low depersonalization risk. Some students refer about depressive symptoms. The survey sample experiences, from one hand, a remarkable workload, and, on the other hand, has also the perception to own much control on its course of study, a good gratification and a positive view of the group it takes part in. It also expresses the feeling of possessing good values and a good equity level within the university framework. The most represented personality features in the group are extroversion, the opening to experiences and conscientiousness.
CONCLUSIONS
The nursing students attend an interesting course of study, but this course is also self-demanding in terms of study and attendance to clinical internships. Thus, it is necessary to underline the importance of supporting the students along their path of cultural, human, in particular, growth because, otherwise, this complexity could have a negative impact on their well-being. As per current knowledge, this is one of the few studies, which both in national and international context, has analyzed this topic.
