Abstract
AIM: The aim of this study is to identify the characteristics and teaching techniques of an effective training guide that can be used to implement the improvement of nursing students’ experience.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Qualitative research was lead using a phenomenological research method. Three open questions were asked to the students of the Modena nursing degree course to identify the teaching characteristics and techniques they believe an effective internship guide should have. I conducted individual interviews, which were transcribed and revised to identify common themes. A faculty professor reviewed the interviews and the common themes to avoid research bias. The interviews were submitted to the students after arranging a private appointment. Fifteen students were involved, among them, ten attended the third year, including two males and eight females and five the second year, including one male and four females.
FINDINGS: Four macro-topics came out after listening to the participants’ audio-recordings and from their analysis, that’s to say: “Professionalism”, “Clinical Teaching ability”, “Role model” and “Educational relationship”. Students felt that these characteristics underlie their formation.
CONCLUSIONS: This research project was born from the strong interest in giving a voice to the students and in order to improve the effectiveness of the role of the internship guides. The clinical tutor is a very important figure because he has the task of following the student during his greatest experience. First of all this figure guides the student to the profession and shows him how to act in the workplace. Moreover, the clinical tutor tries to pass to the trainee his own knowledge, thought and all his experience. Very beautiful, true and sincere features have emerged from this study and I personally fully share them all.
