Abstract

My graduation thesis script deals with the risk of development of “Burnout Syndrome” in nursing, especially focused on the context of pediatric Oncology and Hematology.
Thesis target is to elaborate this phenomenon analyzing the level of diffusion in nursing environment, in particular on the basis of subjective personal experiences of nurses of the division of pediatric Oncology and Hematology working at Policlinico of Modena, interviewed using the “Focus Group” method.

“Burnout is an affective exhaustion syndrome, reduced inward realization, that can occur in people performing defined kinds of job” (Maslach & Leiter, 1997).

The method I adopted to realize my graduation thesis involves a bibliographic research based on scientific literature, using materials found in verified databasis such as PubMed, Cinahl as well as browsers like Google Scholar.
In the first chapter the story of Burnout, the development of relevant different definitions as well as the distinction between stress and burnout – essential for the comprehension of such phenomenon – are exposed.
In the second chapter the aim is identifying and defining the various burnout related factors and the protective ones.
In the third chapter all the possible actions proposed in relevant scientific literature, aimed of preventing and reducing risks, are developed.
The fourth chapter describes the more frequent emotions likely to be felt by the nurses operating in high risk contexts as for the stress syndrome development.
The fifth and last chapter describes the “Focus Group” technique and the use of the latter as a survey method by analyzing the involved nurses’ interviews with respect to their subjective personal experience regarding the presence of risk factors or those preventing the burnout syndrome development.
