Abstract

This thesis dealt with the clinical procedure of skeletal traction, used as a preoperative immobilization method for some types of fractures, when the surgical intervention is not appropriate or available immediately. We have seen how the practice of skeletal traction has developed by refining its technique, its principles and the benefits guaranteed to the fractured patient. Studies show that the use of skeletal traction has been reduced in most health systems in developed countries; therefore, through the analysis of the available scientific literature, I wanted to verify the effectiveness of the traction according to some evaluation parameters proposed by the articles that are in my thesis. We have seen how some studies are contradictory regarding the benefits, highlighting a deep uncertainty on the topic. It was concluded that the literature is not enough to exclude the advantages or confirm the disadvantages of the use of traction and therefore the application and care of the traction patient do not adapt to the standard definitions of evidence-based practice.
The lack of research also implies a decreased availability for nurses for professional updating and consequently a greater risk for the well-being of patients, to achieve this, it would be necessary to carry out more qualitative studies, in order to better understand the effects of traction on users, not only on a physical but also psychological level.
