Abstract

Background: postoperative delirium is a frequent problem of considerable importance, because it is associated with an extension of the length of stay, an increase in costs and a series of complications related to it. Subject: despite the complications related to it, due to its manifold manifestation, postoperative delirium is not recognised and consequently diagnosed and treated promptly. Method: a bibliographic research was conducted through the consultation of databases, in which numerous scientific articles and guidelines were selected and examinated. Aim of the thesis: is to highlight the most  effective nursing interventions to prevent postoperative delirium, to identify the most relevant risk factors and the interventions to be implemented for timely treatment. Conclusions: the scales for the diagnosis of postoperative delirium are numerous and adaptable in any place of care, in literature there are multiple techniques for prevention and treatment and although many are not easily implemented in contexts such as an Intensive Care Unit or some inpatient departments, they include numerous aspects of the patient. Moreover it can be noticed how the figures that take care and that therefore are more in contact with the patient are fundamental for the recognition of behavioral changes, useful in the diagnosis, but also for affective stimulation and therefore in the non-pharmacological treatment of postoperative delirium
