Abstract

In the last decades the importance of assistance that imitates the intrauterine reality has been emphasized more and more, with the aim of providing the best  possible treatment and the most suitable environment for the support of vital functions, and for the promotion of these little babies’ brain development.             The idea of treating this topic arises from the direct experience of placement in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Modena’s University Hospital during which  it was possible to observe the management of the preterm infant, the application and the effects related to the welfare practices to which infants were subjected. The purpose of this study was to deepen, through a wide review of the literature, which non pharmacologic interventions have proved to be effective in the neuro sensory and psychological development of the subject under examination. A background bibliographic research has been conducted throughthe consultation of online catalogs BiblioMo and OPAC SBN, as well as through the Google Books electronic resource and the UpToDate database.     This has been followed by a foreground research on secondary (Cochrane LIbrary) and primary (CENTRAL, PubMed and CINAHL) databases using the neo-nat * AND "neurological development" search string. The irrelevant documents, those not available infull text, documents not in English or in Italian and the ones  published before the last ten years have been excluded from the results obtained.
The final part of the thesis examined the different non pharmacological techniques, which have proved to be effective in promoting the neurosensory and psychological development of the preterm baby, such as the exposure to the maternal voice in TIN, the infant massage, the musictherapy, the early interactions between the mother and the preterm infant, the use of family rooms, together with the wide range of approaches related to development care.
