Abstract

This paper aims to illustrate the clinical pathway of young patients with severe idiopathic scoliosis who need surgery with posterior instrumental arthrodesis. In particular, it investigates how the pre and post-operative education, by nursing staff, can contribute to improve recovery times, increase the autonomy of the person and his family members to manage complications and emotions. Hence the idea of creating an informative tool that can provide support to promote the knowledge of their clinical condition by encouraging and motivating the patient, emphasizing the positive aspects that this surgery entails. The first chapter illustrates, starting from the anatomy, the pathology in its forms and which conditions lead to surgical intervention. Subsequently, is described the surgery and nursing management from admission to discharge. The last chapter deals with the role of nurses in health education, emphasizing how empowerment, coping and pain management play a fundamental role in the functional and psychological recovery of patients and their families. The information booklet on the first pages defines scoliosis, illustrates how to prepare for surgery and which devices the patient will see when he awakens from anesthesia. Afterwards, the modality of recovery and mobilization is presented, ending with the explanation of the positive aspects that the surgery involves, referring to the figure of the superhero Wolverine, with the aim of associating the pain and adversity experienced in the days of hospitalization, to a starting point to grow and become stronger. So even the patient, over time, will become more and more confident with his "new" body, breaking down the weaknesses and facing life as a superhero.
