Abstract

The goal of the elaborate is to raise awareness about the use of physical restraint in the psychiatric area. By physical restraint, also called physical coercion, we mean, in the medical and nursing fields, the tool that partially or totally immobilizes a person in care, through the use of straps, bodices and other more or less sophisticated means. The different methods of recourse to these means are put in place on patients suffering from mental pathology, in the period preceding the Basaglia Law (Law No. 180/78) and the post-reform period. The aforementioned law brings to light the problems of taking care of the patient in the asylum place, up to the closure of the mental hospitals and the birth of the Department of Mental Health (DSM), which will lead to the closure of the Psychiatric Judicial Hospitals (OPG) and at the opening of the Residences for the Execution of Security Measures (REMS). Nowadays, with the changes made to the "places of restraint", the figure of the psychiatric nurse, who passes from being "guardian of the mad" to a professional point of reference, is inevitably revolutionized. This thesis, through the use of the NANDA-I, NOC and NIC Taxonomy, proposes an assistance planning in order to present nursing interventions aimed at limiting the improper use of physical coercion.
