Abstract

The Augmentative and Alternative Communication is the discipline that studies and develops solutions to balance out temporary or permanent communicative disabilities.  Through augmentative and alternative communication techniques and communication aids, nurses can have a valid support to improve the efficacy of communication with patients, who have compromised verbal communication in intensive care units (ICUs).
This work aims is to analyze how the augmentative and alternative communication aid can be use in intensive care units and which outcomes they can give to the nursing care of compromised verbal communication patients. The data of this paper was acquired from topics texts and databases such as Cinhal and PubMed.
The bibliographic sources shows: the fundamental role of effective communication between nurses and patients with communication difficulties; the benefits of using alternative communication aids; the difficulties that can interfere in the communication process and the advantages that can be obtain, through the use of these strategies, which are perceived by both nurses and patients.
The compromised verbal communication nowadays is a welfare problem.  It’s a ordinary problem in the intensive care units, and for that can’t be ignored.  The main cause of the compromised verbal communication is the use of techniques and devices that support ventilation.  That problem must therefore be managed by appropriately trained operators, with the augmentative and alternative communication aids.  The nursing care and the therapeutic relationship can be improved by an efficient training of the nurses relating to communication, relationships and augmentative and alternative communication techniques.  Consequently, thank to a personalized nursing assistance, made to detecting the patient’s needs, it is possible to obtain an improvement in the patient’s welfare state and a reduction of all those negative moods that can worsen the clinical conditions of the person.
