Abstract

In the management of the person with dementia, nursing staff sets as one of the main objectives the promotion of the quality of life of the patient, not being able to neglect the taking charge of behavioral symptoms. Since the social environment and the physical environment are fundamental elements for the psychological balance of the elderly person, one of the main methods of achieving this goal is environmental management. The nurse is able to modify the physical space to make it "prosthetic", in order to use it as a means of treatment to compensate the person's deficits.
The methodology with which it was conducted is the review of the scientific literature, carried out through the analysis of textbooks, manuals, articles, websites and the main primary databases such as PubMed and UpToDate using the keywords "management", " environment "OR" prosthetic environment "AND" dementia "OR" Alzheimer ".
The effectiveness of the prosthetic environment in improving the quality of life of the person with dementia is well documented in the literature, by means of the construction of a therapeutic prosthesis.
Although many studies have not been conducted regarding the effect that non-pharmacological therapy and, in particular, the prosthetic environment, induces on the prevention of behavioral disorders, it remains the first approach to be applied.
The role of the nurse is fundamental and manifests itself: through the multidimensional evaluation of the patient, especially of the symptomatology, thus detecting his individual needs, putting into practice the theoretical knowledge and the implementation of a care project that sees the objective as the quality of life using the non-pharmacological approach, such as environmental change.
