Abstract

Introduction: The purpose of this work is to deepen, through a wide review of the literature, which strategies have proved effective in order to promote the passage, for the premature baby, from nutrition through a naso-gastric tube, to breastfeeding.
Method: A background bibliographic research has been conducted through the consultation of the BiblioMo and SBN online catalogues, as well as through the Google Books electronic resource and the UpToDate database, followed by a foreground research on the main guidelines databases (National Guideline Clearinghouse, SIGN, RNAO and NICE), secondary databases (Cochrane Library) and primary databases (Pubmed and CINAHL).The keywords used were: preterm AND breastfeeding, translated, when possible, into Mesh terms. All irrelevant documents, those not available in full text and documents not in English or Italian have been excluded from the research.
Results: Several validated techniques have been ientified that have proved to be effective in facilitating the transition from feeding with a naso-gastric tube to complete breastfeeding, such as integrated feeding by cup, spoon, Paladai, glass or plastic dropper, syringe, finger and such devices as the Medela Soft Feeder © and Lact-Aid © trainer.
Conclusions: The healthcare staff, which works in Neonatal Intensive Care Units have the responsibility to encourage mothers to early breastfeeding, supporting them in this transitional period, which is often very difficult, with those strategies which best suit each mother. Such strategies will be chosen according to the specific difficulties of the newborn and taking account of the advantages and disadvantagies of each aid.
