Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to present, through a review of the literature, the Relationship-Based Care Model (RBC). The sources consulted go back to the study and to the in-depth reading of the books: "Relationship-based Care: a model for transforming practice" by Kolouritis and "The Practice of Primary Nursing" by Manthey, integrated with the choice of articles researched on CINAHL, MEDLINE, OVID and PUBMED electronic databases.
The CBR is an innovative model of care delivery characterized by the presence of three fundamental relationships: nurse-patient, nurse with himself and nurse-colleagues; conceived by the nurse Mary Koloroutis in collaboration with the Creative Health Care Management. The goal that the RBC proposes is focusing the attention on the real and potential needs of the patient through the construction of a therapeutic relationship based on trust; the elements that constitute it are organized in such a way as to facilitate their adoption by the National Health Systems, allowing an easier transition from the current system to that based on the relationship with the person.
The idea behind the elaboration of this thesis is to show how this organizational model is a positive innovation for nursing care. In literature, there are numerous studies, information conferences and articles concerning the CBR: in recent times, it is much discussed, in order to change the organizational structure of the hospitals. However, experimental studies at European level have not yet been reported, with the exception of Switzerland, which, through the results gathered by its health system, demonstrates the improvements obtained both within the work team and the client's outcomes.
Keywords: defining nursing, relationship-based care, patient-centred care, holistic care, theory of caring, nurse satisfaction, patient satisfaction.
