Abstract

Relevance of the problem. The preparation of patients who undergo surgery is a delicate moment to ensure safety during and after the intraoperative phase. The pre-admission phase, unavoidable in the conditions of ordinary access to admission for surgery (with the exclusion of emergencies), provides for a series of diagnostic, assistance and take-up activities absolutely necessary for the safe execution of the surgical intervention.
Subject of the thesis. This work analyzes the activities and procedures for managing the phases of preparation for surgical operation. In particular, nursing activities, care plans, information and educational practices implemented in the hospitals of Modena have been analyzed.
Research method. The preoperative procedures carried out in the hospitals of the Modena district were collected and analyzed and subsequently compared with those existing in the literature regarding the preparation for surgery.
Aim of the thesis. The purpose of the thesis is to highlight the number and nature of nursing activities carried out in the phase of preparation of the person to be subjected to surgery.
Critical issues. The nurse plays an important role in preparing the patient for the surgery. It should be noted that for the same surgical operation in the different examined hospitals, the same type of nursing assistance is not guaranteed.
Conclusions. In order to ensure uniformity of the services provided to the patients in preparation for surgery, the existence of appropriate procedures and an training plans is necessary. The presence of a nurse with a good preoperative preparation/education in the preoperative team is essential for the safety of the intervention.
