Abstract

Introduction: The interprofessional collaboration appears to be an area of increasing interest in scientific research, having been identified as an essential strategy for reducing health costs and increasing the quality of the assistance provided. Purpose: analyze the attitude to collaboration among physicians and nurses in the context of an italian hospital, verifying the current situation and identifying either the profitable and the hindering situations or behaviors within the physician-nurse collaboration. Method: implemented through the administration of an anonymous questionnaire to all the new medical and nursing staff of the Nuovo Ospedale di Sassuolo. The tool used was accompanied by a section for personal and professional data collection. Results: 117 nurses, 76 physicians and 6 head nurses participated in the research. The study enrollment rate was 54.3%. From the analysis of the data it is assumed that the nurses dispose to a major aptitude for team-work in relation to the medical profession, analogously to both the female gender and the male one, or, for the units operating at high intensity welfare areas and the medium-low intensity ones. Conclusions: The analysis of the collected data shows a good attitude to collaboration from both physicians and nurses, however, between the two professions, is noticeable a different degree of liability: indeed, in the here present study emerges a greater propensity of the nursing staff to the IPC as well as an higher scores for the younger professional classes. The obtained results reflect a growing need for implementation of appropriate strategies in order to increase the inter-professional collaboration, which is identified in the inter-disciplinary/interprofessional education and collaborative practice.
