Abstract

Phantom limb pain is an overwhelming condition that afflicts many amputated people by reducing their quality of life. Mirror Therapy is a non-pharmacological therapy that can counteract this kind of pain by working on the cerebral cortex using a mirror box. Nurses can use this technique in their care activities: Mirror Therapy is painless, easy to learn and to teach. Moreover, it can be practiced in all the environment considered safe, like home, and when needed, it can take advantage of the support of pharmacological therapy. Mirror Therapy is a valid alternative to invasive or unpleasant treatments and allows many amputated people to get back into their daily life activities independently, restoring good contact with social and affective reality. The aim of this graduation thesis is to raise interest of all healthcare professionals, such as nurses, who take care of suffering amputated people and to encourage them pursuing this useful and effective therapy, supported by scientific evidences.
