Abstract
Burn is an acute traumatic disease caused by the exposure of the skin and its components to thermal, chemical, electrical or radiant sources. It is the fourth most common type of trauma in the world and the injuries it causes are among the most devastating; it can lead to death or for those who survive, a temporary or permanent disability that inevitably creates difficulty to the victim and to the family.
The nurse assists the burned patient from the very first aid, to the discharge from the hospital, as well as to the following medical examinations.
Both steps and different burn treatments as well as the nursing assistance to the adult burned patient are illustrated in this paper.
In addition, in the final part there is an healthcare plan elaborated in the Burn Center of Cesena for patient treated with skin grafts, which aims to emphasize the importance of nursing planning and the need of assistance for this kind of patient.
Books and articles of secondary databases have been used to find the material for this paper. Bibliographic research was carried out with the following keywords: "burn", "burn injuries", "surgical treatment of burns", "skin substitutes", "burn epidemiology".
