Abstract
Background: the skills needed to improve the quality of life of terminal patients and their families require the acquisition of positive attitudes toward end-to-end care.
Purpose: to explore the attitudes of Italian nursing students (Modena) and Spanish (Tarragona), towards lifelong assistance.
Materials and Methods: a transversal and multicentre quantitative study was conducted, using the questionnaire "Frommelt Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying Scale Form B", validated in Italian.
Setting: the research, conducted within the classroom, involved 469 students who participated in it per course year.
Ethical Considerations: the authorizations required for the study were requested by both course presidents.
Results and Discussion: the rate of response obtained, very high in both university environments (Modena, 81.5%, Tarragona, 80.6%). There appears to be limited training in palliative care and end-patient care in both groups, although 70% of students already have experience in assisting terminal patients and their families. There is a great deal in considering assistance to this type of patient a useful training experience. The family is considered a resource that needs to be prepared and sustained in the experience.
The terminal person is considered a subject that has to express an active role in a climate that allows him to express his emotions and in which he can receive honest answers.
Conclusion: the formation of the nursing student, who in the first year comes in contact with patients in end of life, it might be anticipated from a side in the Curricula and other further developed, in order to ensure and train future professionals who know how to deal with and relate in these contexts.
