Abstract

Aphasia is one of the most disabling deficits that may occur after a stroke. Communication problems found in these people, influence negatively their quality of life. In order to provide an appropriate care to people with aphasia, it’s essential to know which are their difficulties and moods.
The aim of this work is to collect experiences both from people with aphasia and nurses about communication problems. Furthermore, this work aims to investigate which are the communication strategies that can be used to support an effective communication.
A review of literature about stroke, aphasia, experiences of people with aphasia and nurses’ communication obstacles and strategies was carried out.
The comparison of studies shows that people with aphasia have many difficulties in communication. The main themes were the re-earning of personal identity, the return to a successful social life and committing in significant activities. Nurses, in turn, find it hard to approach patients who have aphasia and/or don’t apply communication strategies learned in their professional education.
Continuing training of nurses’ communication skills that could be carried out with patients and further learning of these strategies from people with aphasia and their families prove to be very important to ensure an effective communication that can improve also people’s quality of life.
