Abstract
Background: Nurse is the health figure most in contact with the patient and his family, being present in different contexts; the assistance required is holistic and must consider the person in its entirety. There are studies in literature which states that nurses attitudes toward death and dying may affect the quality of health care they provide during the end of a persons life.
Purpose of the study: The purpose is to investigate nurses attitudes in contact with terminal patients, in particular how they rely on some care situations.
Materials and methods: through the research on PunbMed database was identified the questionnaire Frommlet Attitudes Toward Care of The Dying FATCOD, was given to all nurses of Guastalla Hospice, of Assistenza Domiciliare Integrata member of Carpi Ramazzini Hospital, nurses of Lungodegenza and Medicina Prima, after obtaining necessary permissions, between May and September. For data analysis it was used Excel and the help of professional statesman.
Results: Analyzing overall scores, an average positive attitude towards care and death of terminal patients emerged. However, it is possible to hypothesize a greater propensity to the communication by the operators of Guastallas Hospice. It is also possible to suppose that there is a statistically significant relationship of the results with age, qualification and received training regarding a specific care field.
Discussions and conclusions: the results of this study suggest the need for training. Much of the interviewed staff demonstrated the lack of specific skills in end-patient cares field. As Carpis Hospital offers already training courses extended to all staff (not just those who work in specific field of palliative care), it is considered appropriate a next revaluation.
