Abstract

Background: Job satisfaction is related to work performance, patient satisfaction and quality of service. Understandig the nurse’s job satisfaction is really important to improve socio-sanitary organization and at the same time to avoid harmful events such as the early abandonment of work, high levels of stress, physical and nervous exhaustion and burnout. The two mayor problems related to dissatisfaction, reported in all over the world, are the high turnover and the shortage of nurses. The aim of this study is to compare the level of job satisfaction of nurses graduated in “CdS” of nursery of Modena who are working in Italy or abroad.
Materials and methods: An observational study was conducted, by sending an anonymous questionnaire to 3 cohorts of graduated nurses of the “CdS” of Modena. The questionnaire, composed by 38 questions, has been administered to 378 graduates. The number of respondents was of 149, corresponding to a response rate of 39,4%.
Results: The study found that nurses practicing their profession abroad are more satisfied than those who work in Italy. The aspects that abroad contribute to greater satisfaction are: greater autonomy, responsibility, opportunities for professional development and social recognition.
Conclusions: The study shows that the areas in which it would be necessary act are: the possibility of professional development, autonomy, responsibility, workload and teamwork, by promoting an objective and realistic image of nursing profession.
