Abstract

The following dissertation debates about the Burnout Syndrome in people who belongs to the helping professions, a topic which is still poorly known but particularly important regarding the nursing field.
The study of the syndrome aims to define the concept of Burnout from a clinical and social point of view, with the intent to indicate the countless components of the phenomenon and its consequences for the person and organization.
The first chapter consists of the history of the Burnout Syndrome since the origin of the word and the available instruments to study it nowadays. The second chapter makes a deep description of the individual Burnout- related factors which can rather be trigger or a protection when it comes to the development of Burnout in the nursing professionals.
The third chapter talks about the Burnout Syndrome when it comes to the working background especially regarding the nursing profession.
Once the essential concepts regarding the Burnout has been explained, the fourth chapter illustrates the different interventions that that the individual and the organization can carry out to prevent the Syndrome.
A special attention is given to the professional nurses who are predisposed to the development to the Burnout Syndrome and to its psycho-physical consequences, for this reason the dissertation comprehends a fifth chapter which describes a focus group, debated with a group of nurses who currently work at the Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria Policlinico of Modena’s Emergency Room.
In conclusion, the research made on journals point out that the Burnout Syndrome is a form of reaction to work related stress which is typical from the helping professions which develops on nursing professionals who have ineffective coping strategies or in nursing professionals who are exposed to risk factors.
