Abstract

Neuromuscular diseases have been continuously increasing over the last few decades, both as a result of increased life expectancy and poor knowledge of causes, which makes it difficult to prevent.

ASL is a degenerative motor neuron disease that leads to progressive loss of muscle function and motor control, with dysphagia, and dysarthria. Death occurs due to deterioration of the respiratory muscles. Patients affected by ASL necessitate, for these reasons, several vital media such as mechanical ventilation and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy.

These vital supports allow longer survival of the patient and an increase in quality of life but require constant and complex care as well that it is almost always borne by the caregivers, who are subjected to great stress both physically and emotionally.

The nurse's role therefore envisages not only technical skills and theoretical knowledge, but also relational skills that enable him to establish a relationship of help with the assisted and family members, which is essential to allow the patient to receive a conscious and adequate care, and, to the caregiver, to deal with the responsibilities related to the management of the disease.
