Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to describe the management and treatment of the polytraumatized elderly patients. Actually, it is a issue if we consider recent epidemiological data informing us of the increase in the elderly population.
To complicate this demographic development is the morbidity and mortality due to the frequent polytraums that have recently been recorded. In contrast to young people, elderly patients experience severe injuries even after minor trauma. The reduced physiological reserve and the presence of pre-existing pathologies and concomitant drug intake, present a further challenge for nursing. Some medications commonly used in this population can mask or blunt the response to injury. As such, a different approach is needed to treat the elderly patient polytraumatized.
We have often found that the serious polytraums of the elderly are underestimated, in fact we talk about the phenomenon of " undertriage and ageism. Therefore, the nurse needs more skills so that he can recognize special conditions of the geriatric patient in primary and secondary evaluation to implement the appropriate strategies to prevent complications. So it would be appropriate, for effective management, to set up training programs for the nursing professional figure.
Finally in this thesis, has been planned the nursing care through the Nanda-I/NOC/NIC Taxonomy for elderly patient victim of polytrauma.
