Abstract
This thesis deals with the topic of breast cancer assistance and treatment, taking into consideration the latest evidences and outlining the role of Breast Units and Case manager nurses in the treatment of this pathology.
A literature review was carried out, through the analysis of nursing and medicine books, scientific magazines, articles and guidelines. Databases such as PubMed, Cinahl and The Cochrane Library were analyzed, using key words like: "breast cancer"; "breast tumor"; "case manager"; "nursing case manager"; "breast unit"; "eusoma"; "breast care nurse".
The consultation of the nurse Case Manager of Modena was necessary in order to enter in the topic and understand how the diagnostic-therapeutic path of the patient is organized, which is the area of competence and activity of the nurse Case Manager, for which issues the woman can address this person, and what the Breast Unit can do to contribute to the physical and psychological wellness of a woman with breast cancer.
In order to talk about the expierience of Modena as a Breast Unit, it was necessary to take part to various meetings between the professionals of the Unit and talk with them about their work, and the path of the patients inside this Unit.
It was shown that women who are helped by a certified Breast Unit and its Case Manager nurse have the possibility to be cured by a multidisciplinary team, that have a holistic view of the woman. This helps the woman's journey through the cancer, because all of the aspects of the illness are taken into consideration, from the psycological, to the organizational one, so the woman can rely on this team, whose purpose is to simplify her care process.
