Abstract
The increase in the elderly population results in a percentage increase in chronic age-related diseases; among them, dementia also exists. The Alzheimer disease is the most common cause of dementia and constitutes the 50-60% of late-onset cognitive impairment. The impact that the disease has on the affected person and on the people around her leads to define it as "family illness". Paying attention to his growing threat to the comprhensive health and to the repercussions that has on who provides care, could help to improve awareness about the important task of the cargiver and also on perception of care. Thinking of caregiver as a resource to be valued is the basis for the prevent or reducing the psychological and psychophysical disorders that the caregiver may encounter during the health care period. The aim of this elaboration is to describe the main characteristics of such a complex pathology, shedding light on public health interventions targeted to provide strategic instructions to manage this pathology and also on the current organization of this kind of local health care service of the Emilia-Romagna region. The spread of clear and accurate information on available resources, the involvement in the therapeutic pathway and the contact with a professional figure such as nurse's could help to point out any caregivers' careless state of ilness by intervening to support and increase their well-being.
