Abstract

During my training period in the pediatric ward of the Hospital in Sassuolo, I could notice how important it was to have a global approach at the education of the patients and their families regarding especially surgical procedures. The goal is to calm the family and help them to deal with such a delicate moment of their lives as serenely as possible. It is important to make the child and his parents feel always accompanied and never alone along all the way. The main objective of the thesis is to provide the little patients and their parents with an informative instrument of simple understanding. Such an instrument collects the information proposed by the latest guidelines and literature (having done research on UpToDate and PubMed) inherent in the management of the child undergoing adenotonsillectomy, using an appropriate language. In the first and the second chapter are generally described the various phases of the intervention, and an analysis is carried out on the general problems of taking care of the child
and his family, once left the operating room. These problems will be elaborated in the third chapter with the nursing planning assistance.
Nowadays tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are considered between the most common surgical procedures practiced on children. However, how described in the fourth chapter of the thesis, the management of the emotional and psychological impact that this type of situation could have on the child and his parents, turns out to be extremely important. In fact not only it tries to decrease the level of anxiety that precedes a totally new and emotional experience, such as that of the operating room, but
it also prolongs the effect it may have in the following period, as it greatly improves the ability to cope with the child’s convalescence.
