Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate about the procedures governing nursing care within prisons accommodation: to investigate about the role, experience, and collaborative work of nurses with other professional figures, particularly with police
officers. The research included 16 nurses. The data were obtained through a semi-structured interview, which was associated with a questionnaire composed by the Maslach Bournout Inventory (MBI) scales and the General Health Questionaire (GHQ-12), to
investigate their psycho-physical situation. The data analysis shows an evident nurses' desire to carry out further training courses in a growing context. Regarding the collaboration relationship with the penitentiary police, results are mostly positive, with a lower burnout levels than in other hospital operating units. One of the main limitations of this study was the small size of the sample, because of the impossibility of extending the study to the prison police officers, which require special permits and procedures that are more demanding.
