Abstract

Cardiac arrest keeps being the main cause of death in the industrial world. In Europe there are approximately 300.000 cardiac arrests per year, with a survival rate lower then 15%. Besides, the new 2017 Guidelines published by the American Heart Association, highlighted that every year cardiac arrests occur frequently at in-hospital level.
My thesis examines the principal abilities, technical and not, that the nurse has to practice and know for the early diagnosis of the patient in aggravation and it explores the treatment of cardiac arrest at the hospital. These abilities have been recently promoted by the Immediate Life Support as a response to the new 2015 guidelines issued by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC). We carried out a revision of the document consulting the national library service’s catalogue and the main online databases, to obtain the most updated evidences about this topic. It has come to life that the introduction of the course Immediate Life Support, promoted by IRC, which comprehends the medical staff’s training on both technical and non-technical abilities, has increased the percentage of survival of the victims of cardiac arrest. Those practices need to be promoted and increased in every hospital, by training medical staff and especially the nursery department, in order to obtain a continuous improvement about the assistance of the critical patient and a reduction of predictable cardiac arrests.
