Abstract

Introduction: The evidence based nursing practice is becoming increasingly important in promoting excellence in care. Upgrading of nurses is therefore a fundamental aspect and can influence the care provided. Despite being a theme still relevant, the frequency with which nurses use and rely on sources derived from scientific research and respecting the Evidence-Based Practice(EBP) is still very low.
Aim: The purpose of this multicenter cross-sectional study is to explore the sources used by nurses to increase their professional knowledge on clinical-care practice.
Method: It has been administered an anonymous questionnaire to nurses of the Nuovo Ospedale of Sassuolo and the Policlinico of the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria of Modena, in the period from May to July 2017. The tool was composed of a part concerning the biographical and professional data and a part that explored the update sources.
Results: 529 nurses took part in the survey (to a response rate of 60%). Nurses are mainly based on their own experience, on information obtained during basic training and protocols and guidelines. Nurses from the Policlinico and those who have followed EBN or research courses, seem to rely more on sources of scientific research.
Conclusions: Results that nurses rarely resort to updating sources that are based on research and the experience remains an important source of knowledge. Furthermoreit is detected a probable lack of competence in terms of research and EBP and for this reason, it is necessary to intervene by strengthening the continuing education of healthcare staff with more years of service and by supporting young professionals who already have a good starting point. This could promote awareness of nurses and students in formation and have an impact on the quality of care delivered.
