Abstract

Problem: Following the adoption of open visiting policy for relatives, in intensive care units is discuss the possibility to allowing family members to attend resuscitation of their own. Although many studies confirm the will of relatives to remain, the same professionals oppose declaring several fears. In Italy, compared to other countries, this debate is still very recent, also due to regional inequalities that do not allow homogeneous application of open policy.
Purpose: The purpose is to analyze the experiences, opinions and emotions of nurses and physicians about the presence of family members during resuscitation.
Study design: a qualitative, phenomenological study.
Sample: The sample consists of 17 nurses and 7 physicians for a total of 24 respondents, all operating in the intensive care unite of the hospital “Policlinico” located in Modena.
Methods and Instruments: each participant was given a anagraphic and professional survey, which was then required to describe the characteristics of the sample. Subsequently, a semi-structured interview was conducted with the help of five guidance questions, formulated after a reference literature analysis.
Results: from the analysis of data emerged 6 dominant themes and 20 recurrent secondary themes among respondents, showing opinions, experiences and emotions from those who work in a reality that allows the application of this method.
Discussion and Conclusions: Most respondents support the presence of family members during resuscitation, associating many benefits and advantages. However, several fears persist even in the most experienced staff, although no negative experiences are associated with them.
