Abstract
This thesis aims to investigate the nursing care to a person suffering from multiple sclerosis, a chronic and progressively disabling disease. It explores particularly one aspect: the resilience of the patient and the impact that it has on the disease. Multiple sclerosis affects the central nervous system and it involves drastic physical and psychological changes in the life of the person affected. Each individual reacts differently to the changes brought by multiple sclerosis so this requires that the care provided by the nurse must be holistic and personalized. This work examines a particular aspect in the life of the people affected: the resilience and the impact it has on the management of the disease. Resilience is the ability to face a traumatic event in a positive way by implementing an effective adaptation. A resilient patient is able to respond by trying to identify the better solution that could lead to the higher possible quality of life. He does not passively accept what is going on. This study was carried out through the application of the theory of the interpersonal relationships by Hildegard Peplau, which has allowed to study in detail the relationship between the nurse and the patient and his/her reactions in different care phases.
The resilience has been evaluated with the validated scale "CD-RISC" (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale).
As a matter of fact, according to Peplau nursing is a process that binds in an interpersonal and professional relationship the nurse to his client, and whose purpose is to ensure the best possible state of well-being to those who receive assistance.
