Abstract
This paper deals with the clinical case of a person who, following a car accident, underwent a splenectomy, and, by failing to implement the anti streptococcus vaccine, had septic shock that led to amputation of fingers of the hands and feet and blisters spread on the body. To understand the importance and the role of the spleen in the living, the first chapter of the thesis is devoted to the description of its anatomy and physiology. In subsequent chapters are reported the aspects related to splenectomy, describing the causes, reporting epidemiological data and illustrating the main methods of prevention (prophylactic antibiotics and vaccinations) of complications and recommendations to be implemented to avoid them. It is then examined one of the major complications, sepsis by Streptococcus pneumoniae, which can lead to septic shock. Finally, the clinical case is discussed, describing a personalized nursing care plan following the patients needs in order to enable a good quality of life despite his disability. The nurse's work, along with the multi disciplinary team, has led to a significant clinical and psychological improvement of the patient.
