Abstract


Cleft lip and palate is a malformation caused by genetic and / or environmental factors that affect the fusion of embryonic sketches of lips and palate during the growth of the fetus. It is a disease with high incidence that involve collaboration among different health professionals until the full correction of the aesthetic defects and problems that might result. When a child is born with cleft lip and palate, the first problem is to ensure proper nutrition and provide psychological and educational support is provided to parents and families in order to prevent early and long-term complications such as nasal regurgitation, teething, language and social relations problems. In this dissertation, the CLP disease is addressed as a whole, not only from reviewing scientific articles, books and websites of associations that support these children and their families but also, it has been taken into account the clinical case of an infant present in a neonatal unit with relative care planning. The nurse's role during the first steps of these young patients is of vital importance. Immediately after birth is essential to educate parents on the positioning of the infant during and after meals and to the proper handling of the surgical wound following the numerous corrective measures to which he will be exposed. Moreover, not less important is the nurse’s role in providing psychological support to parents in any assistance phase. From the carried out research, it has come to light the significance of CLP prevention during pregnancy, a proper prenatal diagnosis and breastfeeding care, all these aspects have been summarized in this dissertation in order to have a broad outline and a better approach to the disease.
