Abstract

Background. The Italian 118 Prehospital Emergency Systems are based on integrated resources, provided with different personnel as far as skill level is concerned. These resources assure the medical coverage of each local area, while a 118 Emergency Operations Center effectively manages their activities. For some years, several Regional Prehospital Emergency Systems have been worked towards the development and the widespread dissemination of nurse-supported rescue vehicles. Subject. Prehospital inteventions independently managed by nurses, with reference to specific clinical protocols on which nurses are properly trained. Methods. A collection of the nursing procedures scheduled by a few 118 Prehospital Regional Systems in Italy has been accomplished and subsequently reviewed. Objective. The aim of this thesis is to point out the utmost importance of specific protocols and effective training programs that allow nurses involved in Prehospital Emergency Services to provide life-saving treatments by shortening the therapy free interval in many pathological conditions. Conclusions. The comparison between various nursing proce dures adopted in Regione Emilia Romagna, Toscana and Lombardia emphasized the different roles played by nurses in each 118 Prehospital Regional System. This lack of uniformity in Prehospital Emergency protocols makes it hard to envision a shared definition of what is the real, current prehospital nurse competence limit.  A national legal standard is needed in order to assure equality in treatments provided by nurses in a prehospital environment.
