Abstract
The goal of this thesis is to define the effects of Pet-Therapy on the menagement of pain on the hospitalized child. Pain is the 5th vital parameter. More than 80% of hospitalized children suffer pain and at least 60 % of the pediatric accesses in the Emergency Room are due to pain.
In the management of pain there are two types of therapeutic approach: pharmacologyc and non-pharmacologyc.
Pet-Therapy, in Italian "Terapia con gli animali", is part of the field of non-pharmacologyc terapy of pain. This non-pharmacologyc method has distant roots, but the first scientific studies date back to the half of '900. The operations assisted by animals are subdivided in Animal-Assisted Activities (AAA), Animal-Assisted Education (AAE) and Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT).
Many researches prove the efficacy of the AAI in pediatric patients with pain. The interventions of pet-therapy are conducted by an inter-disciplinary team in which nurse is integral part. All the AAI are performed in agreement with the National Guide Lines for the Animal-Assisted Interventions.
The Emilia Romagna region was a leading region in the field of pet-therapy. Starting from 2001 to 2006 there were many AAI, in which it is calculated that a great number of persons joined, around 407.
