Abstract

A diagnosis of a cancer is a striking news in the life of any person who deals immediately with the idea of his/her own death and with the possibility of not succeeding. This emotional reaction occurs despite an increasing number of survivors and, therefore, of former cancer patients.
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the crucial role played by the nurse in taking care of cancer patients risking suicide.
The thesis provides a brief overview of the various psychopathologies linked to the suicidal risk that the nurse has to face, especially of the neoplastic disease and symptoms linked to it which can lead the patient to think about suicide.
Finally the paper analyzes through an interview the experience of a nurse who has taken charge of a patient risking suicide and it shows some considerations about the expert’s responsibilities in identifying the symptoms of the patient’s suffering, the possible suicidal idea and in preventing this action.
The paper is completed by the drafting of a standardized care plan for a cancer patient risking suicide that uses the taxonomy NANDA-I, NOC and NIC.
