Abstract

The preterm birth has become an extremely common condition. The late preterm infant, born between 34 and 36 full weeks gestation, was for years treated as a full term infant by healthcare providers; however with time it has become more clear that this newborn is in fact a premature infant with physiological and metabolic immaturity that expose him to health risks such as respiratory complications, hypothermia, hypoglycemia, feeding difficulties, jaundice and infections as well as increased mortality and increased lenght of ricovery compared to the full term infant. This change has led to the need to correct the health care service, in both short and long term; a change achievable by focusing on close assessment after birth, specific interventions, a discharge planning and follow-up that doesn't exclude the participation of parents.
What has shown to be essential is the work of all the experts (pediatrics, nurses, obstetrics, pediatric nurses) who orbit around the family.
This dissertation has the purpose to describe the health problems the late preterm infants might suffer, to explain multidisciplinary guidelines developed in United States for assistance in hospitals, therapeutic patient education for caregivers and for discharge planning, and to formulate a nursing assistance plan using NANDA-I, NOC and NIC taxonomies considering the most appropriate nursing diagnosis for these infants and their caregivers.
